PS5 Slim vs PS5: get ready for gaming insights

Uncover expected differences, game compatibility, and the latest updates on Sony's gaming console lineup.

The PlayStation siren song plays again, and there are two whispers that are trying to get my heart as a player. The PS5 Slim, a sleek ghost, tempts me with its simple charm: thinner lines, a whisper-quiet hum, and extra space in my already-full entertainment centre. But the first one, which is like a seasoned fighter, roars with raw power and promises unwavering frame rates and graphics that are almost photorealistic.

Do I long for the simple stage, a dance floor where games can happen without any problems? Or does my heart long for the big symphony, the full orchestra of graphic splendour that the original’s power unleashed? This epic battle needs careful planning because picking the right console will determine my next game adventure. PS5 Slim and PS5, get ready to be broken down, compared, and finally beaten. Now is the time to fight for my PlayStation loyalty!

PS5 Slim vs PS5: Pricing

Sony has not lowered the pricing of the new PS5 versions. The PS5 Slim with a disc drive costs $499, while the one without costs $449, a $50 increase over the initial digital-only console. In that light, the digital-only PS5 Slim is cheaper than the one with a disc drive, but not compared to the model released three years ago.

With the higher price, buying a digital model before buying the disc drive would cost more than buying the one with a built-in drive. I have no decent reason for that. My sole suggestion: Buy a $399 PS5 now. After the original variants sell out, the thin models will replace them on store shelves.

PS5 Slim vs PS5 Comparison Table

Every PS5 game waltzes onto both stages, be it the Slim’s sleek silhouette or the original’s bolder form. Performance, however, whispers differences.

PS5 Slim vs PS5

The team liked the PS5’s sleek design, white colour, and the blades on either side of the system, which make it cooler and quieter than the PS4 (if you know what I mean). The PS5 Slim is 30% smaller than the PS5, so it’s not quite as slim as the PS2 or PS3, but it’s definitely smaller than the PS5.

There isn’t as much cooling on the PS5 Slim because it’s shorter and thinner, but this doesn’t really affect games. The PS5 Slim has four side plates instead of the PS5’s two. One of the plates can fit a detachable Blu-ray disc drive, which makes fixes easier or lets you switch from the digital version of the PS5 Slim to the disc version. It costs £99.99 to buy this Blu-ray disc drive.

PS5 Slim vs PS5: Storage and Expandability

The Slim has a full terabyte of storage, which is a lot more than the standard’s 825GB. But the ability to grow? The Slim, on the other hand, doesn’t have an extra spot for future gigabytes because it’s too thin. The original is bigger, but it has an open socket that lets you add more cards to your deck.

The Slim has more space right away, but the original, which can be expanded, is still the best choice for players who can’t get enough room. Pick your digital safe haven: a small, already-filled safe haven or a huge kingdom that keeps growing.

PS5 Slim vs PS5: Game Compatibility and Performance

PS5 Slim vs PS5

Whether it is the slimmer form of the Slim or the more daring form of the original, every single PlayStation 5 game is able to dance onto both stages. The performance, on the other hand, reveals differentiations. Despite its power, the Slim may miss a few frames in games that require a lot of frame rate, and its soothing sound is a little bit odd.

A seasoned performer, the original features smoother framerates and is a virtuoso in sequences that need a lot of attention to detail. Nevertheless, both platforms depict vivid worlds that captivate your senses, regardless of the fact that there may be a few notes that are dropped. Choose your champion: the elegant Slim for a performance ballet that is nearly identical, or the original for its act that is somewhat more virtuosic but still very similar.

PS5 Slim vs PS5: Horsepower and storage

The fact that the new PS5 models have the same internal capabilities as the originals represents yet another significant component of the new PS5 models that should be brought to your attention. This is not a case of the PlayStation 4 vs the PlayStation 4 Pro. Across the entire range of PlayStation 5 consoles, games will function in an identical manner.

One little internal benefit, however, that owners of the new PlayStation 5s receive is an increase in the amount of storage space available to them. The original PlayStation 5 had a storage capacity of just 825 gigabytes (GB) onboard, with the possibility to extend it using external solid-state drives (SSDs). There is a full one terabyte of storage space built into the new ones, which means that you can load a few additional games depending on how large they are.

PS5 Slim: Pros

  • The new PS5 is thinner and takes up less room than the old one.
  • It’s easier to move and fit into different leisure settings.
  • Because the design is simpler, it’s likely to use less power.
  • It might cost less than the regular PS5 form.

PS5 Slim: Cons

  • May compromise storage for slimness.
  • Slim models may limit hardware updates.

PS5: Pros

  • Supports 4K for beautiful images.
  • Supports a large PS4 game library.
  • Simple, intuitive UI.
  • SD speeds up game loading and system response.

PS5: Cons

  • Purchases are difficult due to high demand and supply limits.
  • The console’s size may hinder some configurations.

PS5 Slim vs PS5: Which one should you consider?

The PS5 Slim will soon be the standard PS5. Sony has stated that the Slim model will be the only one available after the original console runs out of stock. This is true whether it comes with or without a disc drive. Its full name is CFI-2000, so check the model number of any computer that isn’t marked as “Slim” before you buy it.

You might think that stores would want to get rid of their old PS5s quickly, but we haven’t seen any deals on them yet. You should buy it if you see it on sale and don’t mind how heavy it is, how little storage it has built in, or how the USB ports are set up. If not, the PS5 Slim is the best choice.

Q: Is the PS5 Slim more powerful than the original PS5?

A: No, both consoles have the same CPU and GPU, so overall performance is very similar. The Slim may see slightly lower frame rates in demanding titles due to its thermal design.

Q: Does the PS5 Slim have a disc drive?

A: Both disc drive and digital versions of the PS5 Slim are available.
