Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4 2024: reviewed

As the foldable market heats up, it’s more important than ever to compare the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. After being shown off at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is now official. It has new features that make it a contender for one of the best foldable phones on the market. But Samsung is no longer the only big player in the business of foldables. The Google Pixel Fold and Motorola Razr+ are both on sale now, and the OnePlus Open is expected to come out at the end of August. That means Samsung can’t really afford to make only small changes to the Galaxy Z Flip 5 each time it comes out.

Now that we have a better idea of what it is like thanks to our hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, the real question is how it will compare to its predecessor. At its Unpacked event on July 26, Samsung showed off the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The cute, pocketable flip phone was shown off at the same time as the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the Galaxy Watch 6 series, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series. However, while the other devices were just small improvements over their predecessors, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 went a step further.

Some of the things we liked about the Galaxy Z Flip 4 are still in the Galaxy Z Flip 5, but there are a few changes that make this the best Galaxy Z Flip update so far. Here are some differences between the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4. This will help you decide if you should upgrade or not.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 was officially announced on July 26, and people could start pre-ordering it right away. It will be available on August 11, and it will cost $999 in the US and £1049 in the UK. This is the same price as when the Galaxy Z Flip 4 first came out in the US, but a little more expensive in the UK. It comes in Mint, Lavender, Graphite, and Cream as standard colors. However, only sells it in four other colors: Blue, Green, Grey, and Yellow.

When it first came out, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 cost $999 in the US and £999 in the UK. It’s available everywhere in the world, and you can buy it online or in stores from a number of different retailers. Now that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has been announced, you may be able to get a discount on it. There are also different color options, with Bora Purple, Graphite, Pink Gold, and Blue being the four standard colors. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 also comes in a “Bespoke Edition,” which lets you mix and match the finishes on the front, back, and frame to create your own style.

The Flip 5 has a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, while the Z Flip 4 had a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage here are faster. On paper, nothing has really changed about batteries.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Design

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4

The Galaxy Z Flip 5’s new Flex Hinge is one of the most noticeable changes. It gets rid of the gap that was on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. It might not seem like a big deal to some, but the newer Flip 5 needs this small change to keep up with other phones that already have no-gap designs, like the Oppo Find N2 Flip and Motorola Razr+.

Both phones are still very sleek, and Samsung didn’t do much to change their looks this time except make the outer screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 bigger. Because the screen is bigger, you won’t be able to change it like you can with the Bespoke edition of the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Display

When opened, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen that, as we’ve already said, has a camera hole in the middle at the top. It has a resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 425ppi. The surface of the flexible plastic is covered with UTG, which stands for ultra thin glass. There is also an adaptive refresh rate that changes from 1Hz to 120Hz depending on what you are doing to keep your viewing experience smooth. It has a good amount of brightness and a great experience all around.

It also has a feature called “Flex Mode” that lets you put the phone down and use the camera or any of the other apps that are better suited for that position. On the back of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, there is a 1.9-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 512 x 260 pixels and a pixel density of 302ppi. It’s more of an information screen than a really useful one, but it does have a camera viewfinder and a few widgets like the weather and alarms. The new, bigger display on the outside of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is a big deal.

The internal display is the same as that of the Galaxy Z Flip 4—a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2640 x 1080 and an aspect ratio of 22:9. The external screen is now 3.4 inches, which is bigger than the 3.26-inch screen on the Oppo Find N2. It has a resolution of 748 x 720 pixels, which gives it a pixel density of 305ppi. This means that it has about the same level of detail as the Galaxy Z Flip 4, but the larger size makes it much more useful overall, which we are very happy to see.

It’s also a big change from the original Galaxy Z Flip, which didn’t let you do much on the outside screen. You can add pictures, clocks, and frames to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, as well as swipe to see notifications and reply with the full keyboard. Core widgets like SmartThings and Galaxy Buds Controller, as well as third-party widgets like Netflix, are also supported.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Camera

When it comes to the cameras, there haven’t been any big changes between generations. Both the Z Flip 5 and the Z Flip 4 have two 12MP cameras on the back. The main lens has an aperture of f/1.8, autofocus with two pixels called PDAF, and optical image stabilization. The ultrawide lens has an aperture of f/2.2 and a field of view of 123 degrees. On the inside of the screen of each phone is a 10MP, f/2.2 punch-hole selfie camera.

Samsung has changed the lens glass for 2023, so the Z Flip 5 should be able to handle light flares better than the old model. Better image processing should also mean less noise in photos and videos taken in low light, but we won’t know how much things have changed until we test a Flip 5. Of course, the Flip 4 can still take a good picture. Samsung’s image processing puts a lot of emphasis on dramatic HDR lighting and bright colors, which may not always be true to life but look great. On paper, though, the Flip 5 should be better.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Performance

The Z Flip 5 comes with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor. This is a tweaked version of what was already the fastest Qualcomm mobile CPU on the market. With 8GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of built-in storage, it should have all the power you need. The old Z Flip 4 used an off-the-shelf version of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which was a flagship chip last year but is now second-best in terms of raw performance power and energy efficiency.

The Z Flip 5 has the same number of memory options, and it also has a low-end storage option of 128GB. When the Z Flip 5 comes out, it won’t suddenly feel old, but it will start to fall behind flagship competitors and won’t be able to match that phone’s frame rates in games.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: Battery Life

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4

When we test the battery life of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, it doesn’t do very well. When the phone’s adaptive refresh rate was turned on, it lasted 8 hours 33 minutes. When it was limited to 60Hz, it lasted 8 hours 57 minutes. It’s not the worst battery life we’ve seen on a Samsung phone in recent years, but it’s a long way from the 11.5 hours needed to make our list of the best phones. It’s also about 1.5 hours behind the average smartphone. The Z Flip 5’s battery was not made bigger by Samsung. To improve its battery life, its same-sized 3,700 mAh battery cell will need to work on the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Pros and Cons

  • Faster performance with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor
  • More battery efficient with LPDDR5X RAM
  • New exterior display with a larger aspect ratio
  • Improved cameras with a wider aperture for selfies

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Galaxy Z Flip 4: which one should you consider?

The Galaxy Flip 5 is a big improvement on the design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. For example, the latest flip phone can be folded flat and has a bigger, much more useful screen on the outside. Some things don’t change, like the cameras, RAM, and battery options. However, the mobile platform that runs the show has been updated, which should lead to better performance. Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the clear winner between the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Is Z Flip 4 successful?

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is better than its predecessor, as shown by benchmarks. Even though the OnePlus 10T has the same hardware, it was also left behind.

Why is the Z Flip 4 so good?

In addition to the more power-efficient Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, the Z Flip 4 has a dual-cell battery with 3,700 mAh, which is 500 mAh more than the battery in its predecessor, which had 3,300 mAh. What’s good? The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a much longer battery life than the Flip 3.
