The App Library offers the ability to change the way you access apps on your iPhone and makes it easy to quickly find your favorite or most used apps. It certainly helps to avoid those tedious moments of having to remember in which home screen or folder you put the application that you need to use at that moment. You can find the App Library by swiping from right to left on the last page of the home screen that currently contains apps on your iPhone.

That could be two swipes, it could be dozens of swipes, and it depends on how many apps you have installed on your Apple iPhone or iPad. As the name suggests, all your apps are stored in the app library and presented in a series of folders based on the categories found in the app store. For example, Instagram and Twitter are in the Social folder, while YouTube is in the Entertainment folder.

Apps in the App Library are presented in category folders with three larger app icons along with four smaller ones in a square grid in the bottom right corner. You can’t rename folders or rearrange the order they appear, but there are a few quick actions that save you from having to scroll through all the apps to find the one you want.

Update iPhone or iPad

To use the App Library, you’ll need to update your iPhone to iOS 14 or later and your iPad to iPadOS 15 or later if you haven’t already. Go to Settings > General > Software Update on both devices. Your device indicates that its software is up to date or prompts you to download and install the latest update.

Open the app library

After updating your device, open the home screen and swipe left until you come to the App Library screen. Here you will see different folders with your apps perfectly organized and hidden according to the category that best fits. Some of the apps have large icons, while others feature smaller icons in groups of four.

You can open an app with a large icon just by touching it. For apps with small icons, tap anywhere in the quadrant of the four small icons to open a screen that shows all the apps in that category. From there, just tap on the app icon.

If you’re having trouble finding a specific app, you can browse or search for it. On the App Library screen, swipe down to see an alphabetical list of all apps installed on your device. To find a specific app faster, tap a letter on the right to see all the apps that start with that letter. Alternatively, start typing the name of the app you want in the app library search box at the top to see related apps. Touch the app icon to launch the app.

Add apps to the home screen

You can add an app from the app library to your home screen if it’s not already there. Touch and hold the icon to open the command menu, then touch Add to home screen. The app icon will appear in the nearest free space on your home screen, but it will also remain in the app library.

Another method of moving apps is to long press on an app until all the icons start to jiggle. This will open the home screen where you can place the icon in the correct place. You can also press and hold an icon on the home screen and select the “Edit Home Screen” command in the menu to make all apps jiggle.
