Key Factors to Consider When Buying a Laptop

???? Purpose and Usage: Determine how you plan to use the laptop. Are you using it for everyday tasks like web browsing, email, and word processing, or do you need it for more demanding tasks like video editing, gaming, or graphic design? This will help you select the appropriate specifications.

???? Processor: The processor is the heart of your laptop. Look for modern, powerful CPUs from reputable brands like Intel or AMD. Choose a processor that matches your usage needs, such as a Core i5 or i7 for general tasks or a more powerful CPU for resource-intensive applications.

???? RAM (Memory): Adequate RAM is crucial for multitasking and smooth performance. For general tasks, 8GB is sufficient, but for demanding applications, consider 16GB or more.

???? Storage: Decide between a traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or a faster Solid State Drive (SSD). SSDs are preferred for faster boot times, improved performance, and reliability, but they can be more expensive. Consider a combination of SSD for the operating system and frequently used applications and HDD for additional storage.

????️ Display: Choose a display size and resolution that suits your preferences and usage. A 13 to 15-inch screen with Full HD (1920×1080) resolution is a popular choice for most users.

Buy if:

  • You want a laptop that is both powerful and easy to carry.
  • You want a laptop whose battery lasts a long time.
  • You like the macOS computer operating system.
  • You need a laptop that can do simple things like browsing the web, sending and receiving emails, and using productivity software.
  • You want a laptop that looks good and feels expensive.

Don’t Buy if

  • To play games or edit videos, you need a laptop with a separate graphics card.
  • You need a bigger screen on your PC.
  • You don’t have a lot of money.
  • You prefer a laptop with a different operating system, like Windows or Linux.

Most people should get the latest MacBook Air, which has an Apple M2 processor. The base model starts at $1,199 and comes with 8GB of memory, 256GB of storage, an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU. A model with 512GB of storage costs $1,399. This is the model we recommend for most people because it lets you use the laptop for longer. The Air has lost the wedge-shaped design that made it famous for years, but it still has many of the great features it had before, like MagSafe charging, Touch ID, and the scissor-switch keyboard. It also has a new 1080p webcam and comes in two new colors.

The M2 processor inside isn’t as fast or powerful as the M1 Pro or M1 Max processors in the larger, more expensive MacBook Pro models, but it’s still very fast. During our tests, it could handle heavy office work without getting too hot or slowing down. Since this device is thin and light, it gives you a combination of power and portability that you won’t find in many other machines. In our rundown tests, the M2 Air didn’t have quite as much battery life as the 16-inch M1 Pro MacBook, but most people should still be able to use it nonstop for a full day.

Buy if:

  • You need a powerful laptop for demanding jobs like video editing, 3D rendering, or gaming.
  • You want a laptop that has a good screen.

Don’t Buy if

  • You don’t have a lot of money.
  • You prefer a laptop with a different operating system, like Windows or Linux.
  • You don’t need a machine that can do so much.

The M2 Air is the best MacBook that Apple has ever made. It’s kind of the category’s ideal, and it’s the result of a lot of important changes to the product line, like the arrival (and upgrade) of Apple silicon and the company’s realization that some things (like bad keyboards and the Touch Bar) just couldn’t be fixed no matter how hard it tried. we don’t think I’ve ever liked an Apple laptop more than the 2022 MacBook Air, and we don’t think that will change any time soon, at least not until the 2023 Air comes out. Even though Apple is putting out two new Pro models this month, the Air from last year is still the best mainstream laptop the company has ever made.

There is, of course, a catch. There are always. No mass-produced computer will make everyone happy, no matter how many new ideas it is based on. In fact, the Air has always been as much about what it doesn’t say as what it does. It’s true that the Air is at its least-compromise point right now, but making something thin and light has always meant giving up something.

Pros

  • Powerful performance
  • Stunning display

The Spectre x360 14 is so good that it’s hard to find something wrong with it. It looks and feels like a top-of-the-line machine and is built to last. But the Spectre x360 14 isn’t just nice to look at; it’s also a pleasure to use as a daily work driver. Intel’s newest 11th Gen processors and Iris Xe graphics work quickly, and we didn’t notice any slowing down or freezing. We used the device for an average of 10 hours, which is one of the best results we’ve ever seen.

The Spectre has a large 3:2 display on the outside. If you don’t like the FHD resolution, you can choose between OLED and 1,000-nit. There is even a stylus in the box that can be attached to the side of the Spectre with a magnet. This is useful if you want to use the device as a tablet.

Pretty much everything else about this laptop is on par with or better than the best convertibles on the market, from its smooth keyboard and touchpad to its bass-heavy sound and useful ports. Such a great set of features doesn’t come cheap, and many customers will find everything they need in a less expensive product. But the Spectre x360 14 is now the best Windows convertible laptop you can buy.

Pros

  • The HP Spectre x360 14 is one of the most premium 2-in-1 laptops on the market.
  • It has a powerful Intel Core processor and plenty of RAM and storage, so it can handle even demanding tasks.
  • The OLED display is stunning and offers excellent color reproduction.

Cons

  • The HP Spectre x360 14 is expensive.
  • It doesn’t have an SD card reader, which can be a drawback for some users.
  • It doesn’t support Thunderbolt 4, which is a newer and faster connectivity standard.

Buy if:

  • You’re a creative worker who needs a laptop that can do a lot of different things.
  • You want a laptop with a second touchscreen device that you can use for work or for making things.
  • You want a laptop with a good screen and a battery that lasts a long time.
  • You like the Zenbook line of computers from Asus.

Don’t Buy if

  • You don’t have a lot of money.
  • You don’t need a second screen that you can touch.
  • You like the classic look of a clamshell laptop.
  • You don’t like the Zenbook line of computers from Asus.

Finally, there is a laptop with two screens that we think you should buy. In the past, having two screens felt like a gimmick, was hard to see, and was hard to use. But in the Zenbook Duo 14, Asus put the screen at a much higher angle than before, gave it a higher resolution, and etched it in a way that makes it useful.

With Asus’s ScreenXpert software, Zenbook Pro Duo users have a small, clear secondary OLED monitor on their keyboard deck. This second screen can also be turned into a huge touchpad, which is helpful because the touchpad that comes with the device is pretty small. The device also has powerful chips from Intel and Nvidia and a large 16:10 main screen. Even though not everyone will like the keyboard in the front, this innovative device is the best choice for shoppers who want more than one screen in one device.

  • You prefer a laptop with a different operating system, like macOS or Linux.
  • For games that require a lot of graphics power, you need a laptop with a separate graphics card.
  • You need a laptop that can last longer on a single charge.

The latest Dell XPS 15, which starts at $1,449 and was tested at $2,299, is not a new or groundbreaking laptop. It’s almost the same as its predecessors, like the Dell XPS 15 OLED 2021, except that its insides have been updated. But this machine is still one of the best Windows laptops you can buy, even though it doesn’t change things much. This laptop is great for everyday use, and it also works well as a gaming machine. Even though it’s expensive, it’s hard to argue against how well it works. It can handle almost anything, as long as you have enough money to make the changes you want.

The Dell XPS 15 is an ultrabook because it is only 13.6 by 9.1 by 0.73 inches. Its machined aluminum chassis has a solid, smooth feel. It looks great at the office, at home, or in a cafe. The only thing on the silver lid of the laptop is the well-known Dell logo. At 4.2 pounds, it’s a bit heavy, but it’s still light enough to carry around. The interior is all black and has big keycaps and a big touchpad. The speakers are on either side of the keyboard. The laptop looks even better thanks to the thin bezels around the InfinityEdge display.

Pros

  • Stunning OLED display with vibrant colors and deep blacks
  • Powerful performance for demanding tasks
  • Long battery life
  • Slim and lightweight design
  • Premium build quality

Cons

  • Expensive
  • No optical drive
  • Limited ports
  • Touchpad can be a bit small

  • You want a laptop that you can also use as a tablet.

  • For hard jobs, you need a laptop with a powerful processor.
  • To play games or edit videos, you need a laptop with a separate graphics card.
  • You need a laptop that has a big screen.
  • You want a laptop that runs Windows.

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3 is bigger, brighter, and faster than the original Chromebook Duet. Even though it costs more and doesn’t last as long on a single charge, it hits the same spot: A cheap Chrome tablet that works well and comes with a keyboard, making it a surprising 2-in-1. If you don’t like the idea of typing on a removable keyboard cover, you might prefer a more traditional Chromebook with a clamshell design. However, the fact that the Duet 3 can be used as both a tablet and a laptop makes it very versatile for the price.

The Duet 3 is slightly bigger than its predecessor, the Duet. It has an 11-inch 2K (2,000 x 1,200 pixels) screen and a thin black aluminum body. With dimensions of 10.16 x 6.48 x 0.31 inches and a starting weight of 1.14 pounds, the Duet 3 isn’t quite as light or thin as the base iPad 2021 (0.29 inches, 1.09 pounds), but it’s pretty close. In my hands, it feels sturdy and light enough to carry around the house all day.

Check Price

Pros

  • The detachable keyboard and kickstand make it easy to use in laptop, tablet, or tent mode.
  • The long battery life means you can use it all day without having to worry about running out of power.
  • The affordable price makes it a great option for budget-minded buyers.

Cons

  • The slow processor can make it sluggish when running demanding tasks.
  • The limited storage space can fill up quickly if you store a lot of files on the device.
  • The lack of a USB-A port can be inconvenient if you need to connect legacy devices.

  • You need a laptop with a graphics card that is all its own.
  • You need a bigger screen on your PC.
  • You prefer a laptop with a different operating system, like Windows or Linux.

The HP EliteBook 840 G9 is thin, can be fixed, and has a lot of ports that are useful. This new version fixes almost everything we didn’t like about the EliteBook 840 line the last time we tested it. It has a better 5-megapixel webcam, a redesigned keyboard, and a bigger 16:10 display, among other improvements. If almost any part of the laptop breaks, it can be fixed.

HP’s PartSurfer site makes it easy to find a part number and order a replacement right away. We did find a few parts that were out of stock, but at least you’ll have the right part number to look for on eBay or other resellers. HP also has a detailed service guide that tells you how to fix your laptop.

Every part of the Framework Laptop 13 is easy to fix or upgrade, and all of the parts can be bought from the Framework website. Each part and screw is helpfully labeled, and there are QR codes that take you to step-by-step replacement guides that also have links to the exact parts you’ll need. You can add more memory and storage, but you can also replace or upgrade the battery, add a new processor to the mainboard, or fix anything else that breaks, like the screen, fingerprint reader, keyboard, hinge, etc. The Framework Laptop 13 is also a very good computer.

It’s strong and surprisingly thin and light for how modular it is. It has a reliable keyboard, trackpad, and a large, bright screen. But the Framework Laptop 13 has hours less battery life than our top ultrabook pick, and if the company goes out of business or stops making parts, you won’t be able to upgrade or fix it. So far, the company is off to a good start. In 2021, they released a laptop with 11th-generation Intel processors, and in 2022 and 2023, they updated the mainboards to work with 12th- and 13th-generation processors.

Pros

  • Extremely modular design
  • Upgradable components
  • Long battery life
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Good performance

The Chromebook Flip CX5, a beautiful $800 laptop that runs Chrome OS, was a surprise from Asus. It has a unique smooth texture and is as sturdy and well-built as any Windows laptop that costs more. It has all the features of a full laptop, like a 57Wh battery, which gives it fast performance, a long battery life, and fast charging. You get a lot of different ports, like HDMI and a microSD slot. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2022), which starts at $1,649, is the latest version of one of the best gaming laptops we’ve ever tested and one of the best gaming laptops for most people on the market. The 2022 Zephyrus G14 we looked at has a better and brighter screen than its predecessor. It also has good speakers and a good AMD CPU/GPU combo for gaming. It also has a webcam built in, which is something that earlier models didn’t have.

But even with these changes, the new Zephyrus G14 is weaker than its predecessor in some ways. It doesn’t last as long on a single charge, the gaming performance is good but not always better than what you’d get from competitors with similar prices, and the webcam is bad. Still, for the price, it would be hard to find a better gaming laptop that can also be used for work or school.
