How to Change the Finder Dock Icon on Mac OS: Step-by-Step Guide

Are you tired of the default Finder dock icon on your Mac? In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of changing it to something more personalized. Follow these steps to give your Mac a fresh look!

Step 1: Find the Icon

First, you’ll need a PNG file of the icon you want to use. Make sure it’s transparent and at least 256×256 pixels in size. Name it “finder.png” for regular Macs or “finder@2x.png” for Retina Macs.

Step 2: Navigate to the Resources Folder

Open Finder and press Command + Shift + G. Then enter the following path: “/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/”. This will take you to the folder where the Finder icon files are located.

Step 3: Back Up the Original Icons

Make a copy of the existing “finder.png” and “finder@2x.png” files and save them to your desktop or another location. This serves as a backup in case you want to revert to the default icon later.

Step 4: Replace the Icons

Drag and drop your new “finder.png” file into the Resources folder. When prompted, confirm the replacement. This will replace the original Finder dock icon with your custom icon.

Step 5: Clear the Icon Cache

Navigate to “/private/var/folders/” using the Go to Folder function. Search for “com.apple.dock.iconcache” and delete it. This will clear the cache and ensure that the new icon appears in the Dock.
