Check Fix ‘Unidentified Network Error’ in Windows

From time to time, you may face an issue with network connectivity while trying to connect to the network, where the error says “Network not identified”. While there’s no specific trigger fix for this, we’ve added a full rundown of troubleshooting steps that you might find helpful. Kindly go through the full list first and then conclude which of them might apply to your situation.

How to fix “Unidentified Network” in Windows 11

Turn off airplane mode

We’ve all made a mistake by leaving a feature on and not realizing it later. Since Windows 10 supports airplane mode, there’s a chance you accidentally left it on or didn’t even realize you turned it on in the first place.

  • Click on the network icon on your task bar. You can find this in the notification area at the bottom right of the screen. If the icon is not visible, click the up arrow to see hidden items.
  • Check if the flight mode is activated. If so, click the flight mode icon again to turn it off.
  • Try to reconnect to your network.

Run Windows Troubleshooter

Windows 10 comes with a plethora of troubleshooters that address almost all of your operating system issues. For network problems, such as the network not identified error, you can use the handy Network Troubleshooter. It is readily available as it is a built-in feature of Windows 10.

  • Click the Windows icon at the bottom left of your screen, then choose Settings. You can also use the Windows + I shortcut.
  • Choose Network and Internet from the options.
  • Make sure the Status tab is selected.
  • Click on Network Troubleshooter.
  • Wait for the troubleshooter to detect problems, then follow the on-screen instructions to fix them. The Network Troubleshooter may not identify any errors; if that is the case, continue reading our article.

Restart your router and modem

If you use a router and modem to access the Internet, it is recommended that you restart them properly to ensure that they are not causing problems with your network. When these devices are left running for a long time without rebooting, they can start to act up and make your online life that much more difficult.

  • Disconnect your router and modem. Make sure you don’t press any of the buttons labeled “Reset” or “Reboot,” as these usually mean restoring factory settings rather than rebooting the device.
  • Wait at least 30 seconds. This gives your devices time to cool down and allows all connected devices to detect that the router is unavailable.
  • Reconnect your modem. Most modems automatically turn on when plugged in, but you may have to manually press the power button.
  • Wait another minute. Give your modem time to reconnect to the Internet and properly authenticate your IP address and Internet provider.
  • Plug the router back in. Again, you may need to turn it on manually.
  • Wait a couple of minutes. Allow the router to boot up and let your devices detect it again. When everything comes back online, test if the network not identified error still exists.

Renew your IP address and flush your DNS cache

This method can help you if your IP address is misconfigured. We’ll use a few commands to release and renew your device’s current IP address, then flush any DNS-related cache present.

  • Press the Windows + X keys on your keyboard, then select Windows Powershell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Enter the following command: ipconfig /release
  • Now enter the following command: ipconfig /renew
  • When you are done renewing your IP address, use the following command to flush any DNS cache: ipconfig /flushdns

Update your network driver

It is extremely important that you keep your drivers up to date by updating them regularly. An outdated network driver can lead to problems with your network, such as getting the Network Not Identified error. Temporarily disable your antivirus

With more and more antivirus apps offering network protection, it is possible that they will mess with your settings and mess something up. The easiest way to test this is to temporarily disable any third-party antivirus software.

  • Right click on an empty space on your taskbar and choose Task Manager.
  • Click More details.
  • Switch to the Home tab at the top of the window.
  • Locate your antivirus app and select it by clicking on it once.
  • Click the Deactivate Now button visible at the bottom right of the window. This will prevent the app from launching when you start your device.
  • Reboot your computer and try connecting to your network again.
