Discord is definitely one of the best voice communication apps available today. Thanks to super-optimized audio compression, it can provide uninterrupted, high-quality voice chat even when streaming resource-intensive video games. Discord works through virtual servers that direct communication between chat participants. While it may seem complex, setting up your own Discord server is quite easy. TeamSpeak is no longer the undisputed king of VOIP services. If you’ve been playing multiplayer games, chances are your friends are already making you join them on Discord. If you haven’t heard of Discord, it’s a free chat service focused on the gaming industry. It has inherited many elements of Slack (chat channels and group voice) while maintaining a simple and intuitive interface.

The Discord community is already 50 million and continues to grow exponentially. If you were in the IRC era, you’ll be pleased to know that Discord works the same way. You can enter and chat in regular text channels or use slash commands. If you want to voice chat, you can join a voice channel and talk to other members using a headset. Whenever you want, you can quickly set up a server for yourself and your fellow gamers. Once you have everyone in the same place, you can set up a voice channel for a specific game and invite your A-Team.

Creating a Discord Server on Windows

To create a Discord server, you must have a validated account. You can easily do this by downloading the Discord client from here. After installing the client, you will be automatically prompted to create and validate your account. Once you have a fully activated Discord account, follow the steps below:

  • Open Discord and tap on the + icon. It’s located somewhere in the left section of the screen.
  • On the next screen, click Create a server.
  • Now you need to decide on a name and icon for your new discord server. While the latter option isn’t mandatory, it certainly gives you an aesthetic boost. Once you have that up and running, choose a server region. Try to set one closer to you and your friend’s location. The server region will play a key role in determining the overall ping when using voice communication. The lower the ping, the faster your message will reach your brothers in arms. Hit Create when everything is in place.
  • Now that the server is created, it’s time to invite your friends. You can quickly invite your friends by clicking the Create Instant Invitation icon.
  • You can copy the invite link and send it to all your friends. If they don’t already have a Discord account, they will be prompted to register and validate their accounts. But tell them to speed up the process because invitations expire after 24 hours. You can dim the invite availability by clicking the gear icon in the bottom right corner of the popup.

Create a Discord server on Android

If you are looking to create a Discord server from an Android server, the steps are slightly different but the end result is the same. This is what you need to do:

  • Download and install the Discord app on your Android from the Google Play Store.
  • Open the Discord app and sign in or create an account if you don’t have one.
  • Once you have successfully logged in, tap on the + icon (left side of the screen).
  • Select Create a new server.
  • Now it’s time to set up your new server. Decide on a name and an image (optional). After that, scroll down and select a region (under Server Region) that is convenient for you and your friends. The more precise the region, the less delay you will have with your voice conversations. Hit Create when you’re ready to continue.
  • After creating the server, tap the action button in the top left corner and select Create Instant Invite.
  • Discord will automatically generate a link that you can use to invite your friends to the server you just created. You can modify some settings by tapping the gear icon near the invite link. Click Share Link when you’re ready.
  • Choose an app from the lineup that will allow you to invite your friends.
