How to Play GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo Switch can now be used to play GoldenEye. Oh, we’ve been waiting so long to type that sentence! Rare’s groundbreaking first-person shooter could only be played on the N64 for 25 years. Now, it can be played on the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack or on Microsoft’s Xbox with a subscription.
But anyone who has already tried the game on Switch may have had trouble controlling it. The way the N64 pad inputs map to a modern dual stick controller is, to put it mildly, a bit messy. If you use the default layout, you’ll probably press the wrong buttons and pull the wrong trigger, at least at first.
It looks like the controls on Xbox are already set up for dual-analogue control, but not on Switch. Buttons can be remapped at the system level, and Alex explains the simple steps in the video above. However, remapping can be a little bit of a pain.
How to Play GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo Switch
- Go to System Settings, then Controllers and Sensors, and then Change Button Assignments.
- Create a control profile for GoldenEye.
- Change the left analog stick so that it works like the right analog stick.
- Change the right analog stick so that it works like the left analog stick.
- Change ZR to work like ZL, so you can use ZR to fire.
- Change ZL to work like L, so you can use ZL to manually aim.
- (Optional) Change L to work like B so you can use L to do things.
- (Optional) Change R to work like A, so you can change weapons by pressing R.
- Start GoldenEye and start a mission. Use the right analog stick to move through the menus.
- Take a break and go to Controls.
- Change from Honey to Solitaire (1.1 to 1.2).
- Go to “Settings” and change “Look Up/Down” to “Upright.”
Can you buy GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo Switch?
- Open the Nintendo eShop.
- From the eShop menu, choose Nintendo Switch Online.
- Click on the “View/Change Membership” button.
- You can buy a membership to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for yourself or for your whole family.
- You can’t play the game with a regular NSO membership; you need one that comes with the Expansion Pack.
- You can’t buy the Expansion Pack on its own.
- When you get back to the Nintendo Switch Online menu, scroll down to “Content for Expansion Pack Members” and download the Nintendo 64 emulator.
- To play the game, open the emulator and choose GoldenEye 007.
GoldenEye 007 is now available on Nintendo Switch?
GoldenEye 007 is now available on both Xbox and Nintendo Switch at the same time, but there are some important differences between the two games.
GoldenEye 007 for Xbox is a remastered version of the legendary 1997 Nintendo 64 game of the same name. The remaster has 4K resolution, smoother frame rates, and split-screen local multiplayer, which is similar to an Xbox 360 version from 2008 that was supposed to come out but didn’t because of licensing and rights issues.
It leaked out in 2021, though. As part of its Nintendo Switch Online service, Nintendo has also put out GoldenEye 007.

If even Diamond mode doesn’t suit your fancy, there’s also a customizable control option to remap the controls as you see fit. None of that means the game is unplayable on Switch, but it does mean that you’ll need to unlearn your default control schemes to master Goldeneye’s.
