Every time an iOS device or app hangs in the wrong direction that doesn’t respond to rotating the device, it either stays upright or horizontal, despite every effort to turn the device in any direction. While this seems to happen more often on an iPad than an iPhone or iPod touch, it can still occur on any iOS device and with almost any app.

Fortunately, resolving this disadvantage is usually a very simple process.

1: Toggle the direction lock on and off

While this may seem reasonable, it’s not uncommon to either forget that the directional lock is on (or off) and it’s easy to check. In addition, sometimes just turning the switch back on / on is enough to release a device that is stuck in either a horizontal horizontal or vertical vertical mode. Just turn the side switch ON and OFF for iPad. Or you can do it through the software as follows:

In iOS 7 and later:

  • To call up the control center, swipe up from the bottom of the screen
  • Tap the Orientation Lock button in the upper right corner to turn ON and OFF

On iOS 6 and above:

    • Double-tap the Home button to call up the multifunction bar and scroll left until you see the Direction Lock button

  • Tap the button to toggle it on and off, then return to the stuck app and try rotating again in the desired direction

This is especially effective on iPad models with Hardware Buttons for this purpose, and for those that set the side switch to act as a directional lock rather than a mute button.

2: Kill the application and restart

Sometimes the app is just stuck, and in this case just stopping and starting it is usually enough to displace the weird orientation.

In iOS 7:

  • Double-tap the Home button, and then swipe to the stuck app
  • Swipe up to close the app and restart the app

To close an app, swipe in iOS 7

On iOS 6 and above:

    • Double-tap the Home button to open the multitasking bar
    • Tap and hold the app icon until it starts blinking, then tap the red (-) button to exit the app

Close the app on iOS

  • Restart the same application to find the direction to work as usual

If the application does not respond and is actually frozen, you must use it instead to force it to quit.

Closing and restarting most applications solves the problem completely, and it is quite rare for the device to restart unless the home screen itself is stuck.

3: Everything else fails? Restart iOS

While iOS is remarkably stable, sometimes just restarting your iPhone, iPod, or iPad is enough to set the direction to work again (not to mention other stubborn mistakes or insights). This is especially true if the home screen and pop-up board are stuck vertically or horizontally and the tricks above did nothing. The simplest way to turn on the device is basically just to turn it on and off again:

  • Hold down the power button until the “Slide to Unlock” message appears, and then slide
  • Now hold down the power button until you see the Apple  logo on startup

Once the iPad, iPod, or iPhone is restarted, the direction should be responsive again, but don’t forget to check the settings again to make sure.

This is the same approach when a device freezes or crashes relentlessly, and it often works to solve all sorts of more peculiar unexplained problems.

Direction stuck in iOS?

Another seemingly unique thing about newer versions of iOS is that the direction hangs and none of the above solutions work. In this situation, the Compass application may demonstrate the solution outlined by David B. in our comments. Simply open the Compass app and go to Level, then flip the calibrate Compass, and then flip iPhone repeatedly to its page until it registers. This seems to solve the problems associated with orientation jam in iOS 7 and later.
