This guide works the same way on all devices, either iOS 6 or iOS 7.
Set up Lavabit Secure Email with iOS Mail
Note that if you can use POP or IMAP, we will focus on IMAP so that previous emails remain accessible on another device and / or a lavabit webmail client. The configuration for POP3 is the same except for the port number, which uses 995 rather than 993.
- First, sign up for Lavabit, two free email accounts work well for this purpose, or you can choose paid plans – write down your username and set a strong password, but don’t forget this password because it’s not reset or a recovery option for added security
- Open iOS Settings and go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select Add Account…
- Tap “Other” and on the “New Account” screen, enter a description, email address (username@lavabit.com), password, and “Lavabit”, then tap Next
- Use both the incoming mail server and the outgoing mail server to use “lavabit.com” as the host name, enter your username and password in the corresponding fields, and then tap Next
- Change the “Notes” setting to OFF and keep the Mail setting “ON” and then click Save.
- You are not ready yet, you still need to configure certain ports for outgoing and incoming mail servers. Return to Settings> Mail, Contacts, Calendars> select your new Lavabit account, then tap your account name
- See “Outgoing mail server” and tap SMTP, then tap “lavabit.com” and “Outgoing mail server”, make sure SSL is set to ON, and set “Server port” to 465, and then tap “ Made”
- Now tap back to the Account screen, now select Advanced and look for Inbox
- Make sure “Use SSL” is set to ON, and set “Server Port” to 993
- Exit Settings
Now visit the Mail app. Take a quick test and send an email to your newly created Lavabit address from another email account. Once that email has arrived, also send a reply email to make sure everything is working as intended. Note that if outgoing mail doesn’t work, it’s probably because you didn’t configure the outgoing server port correctly, so go back to the step of setting it. If you speeded up the installation process, iOS will configure Lavabit email as if it were a regular email account, and the ports will not be set correctly.
If you’ve never used multiple email addresses on iOS before, the default view setting in Mail is to keep two mailboxes connected visually. To change it or view messages from only one email account at a time, tap “Mailboxes” and select “Lavabit” (or any other mail).
Now that Lavabit is set up, sending mail from your Lavabit address is just writing a message as usual and then tapping the From field to select username @ lavabit mailing address. Now you can finally send encrypted emails to and from Santa!
