Geekom Mini IT11 review (2024) compact PC with big potential

GEEKOM was able to pack a lot into the tiny metal frame.

In a body that’s barely bigger than your palm, the Geekom Mini IT11 is a pocket rocket of a mini PC. The only thing that stands out about this minimalist marvel is how well it works. It’s a sleek black cube that blends in with your workspace. Forget about big, clunky towers and desktops; this tiny titan is all about efficiency. It will free up space on your desk while handling your work with surprising power.

Geekom Mini IT11: Description

The Mini IT11 is ready to be your silent, sneaky partner whether you’re a creative person with a deadline to meet, a gamer who wants smooth gameplay, or a professional who has to keep track of spreadsheets. Get rid of the stuff on your desk and welcome the future of computers, one small powerhouse at a time. Geekom makes good mini PCs, and the Mini IT11 is their newest hit. This little workhorse is great for most desktop tasks and works well at home or in the office.

It gives you a lot of options because you can upgrade the RAM and storage. Even Linux can be put on it, but it comes with Windows 11 Pro. Not only does the simple design of the machine look great, but it also has a tonne of high-end ports. Given how small this PC is, it gives you a lot of choices. It has two display outputs, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 4, gigabit Ethernet, and a lot of USB ports. The PC can even have a 2.5-inch SATA drive added to it. Based on the tests, the 11th-generation processor also works very well.

Price and Availability

With the coupon code XMIT11A, the 16GB/512GB version of the IT11 will only cost $589 until the end of December 2022, and the 32GB/1TB version will only cost $709. Both have an 11th generation Core i7-1195G7 CPU. A model with an i5 processor costs £479 from the same source. This NUC Mini PC is one of the more expensive ones on the market, but it’s not too expensive considering what it can do. The price is about the same as other brands that have chosen the 11th Gen mobile platform.

Geekom Mini IT11: Design

Geekom Mini IT11

The Mini IT11 is very similar to the MiniAir 11 from the same maker, showing that its designers understand NUC. This system uses a metal structure with reinforced plastic panels in business-friendly metal grey. Air enters through fine metal grills on the sides and a high rear vent for active cooling. The port layout works for monitor-mounted or desk-mounted machines, with most permanently occupied ports on the back.

These include the 90W laptop PSU power connector, gigabit Ethernet, Mini DP, HDMI, Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2, and 20Mbit USB 4.0 ports. That last port seems odd since USB 4.0 is supposed to offer 40Mbit? It may be faster than the 20Mbit Gen 2 port, so we shouldn’t complain. On the front are USB 4.0 20Mbit and USB-A 10Mbit ports, a 3.5mm audio jack, and the power button. The right side has a Kensington security slot and SD Card reader. The chassis is easy to enter.

Even though the top is almost invisible, a spudger can remove it quickly. More rewarding is removing the underside via four screws that pin the rubber feet to access the memory slots, SATA drive bay, and M.2 slot. If your budget allows for 8TB and 16TB M.2 modules next year, the IT11 can be a great media server. As with the MiniAir, this design isn’t revolutionary, but it works well for its intended use.

Geekom Mini IT11: Features

It has strong Core-i5 or Core-i7 mobile processors, like the top-of-the-line Core i7-1195G7 from the Tiger Lake generation. For its size, it’s pretty fast. It has four cores, hyperthreading, and a base frequency of 2.9GHz that can go up to 5GHz. It can handle up to 64GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and the Iris Xe GPU is a big step up from Intel UHD Graphics.

The cooling system can handle the 28W of power without making too much noise or slowing down due to heat. You can change the NVMe drive (Intel 660p) to get better performance. Because there is a ribbon cable connected to the SD Card reader, it is important to be careful when accessing the insides.

Ports and Upgradeability

Geekom Mini IT11

Like other Geekom machines, the Mini IT11 has many expandable ports. It has three USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, two USB-C Gen 4, an SD card slot, mini DisplayPort, HDMI, and gigabit ethernet. The Mini IT11 could use a 2.5GbE port, but most home networks aren’t set up for that speed (and most people don’t have gigabit internet plans). For upgradeability, the Mini IT11 follows Geekom’s flexible approach. All four models have 16GB dual-channel SODIMM laptop RAM.

However, you can upgrade to 64GB RAM yourself. Your machine would be fast with 11th-gen processors. All Mini IT11 models have 512GB NVMe storage. Upgrade to a 2TB NVMe SSD for more space. If needed, you can install a 2TB 2.5-inch SATA drive on the Mini IT11 for 4TB of storage. Everything else about the Mini IT11 is fixed, but I love seeing more mini PCs offer RAM and storage upgrades. Geekom’s port selection is top-notch. I doubt you’ll need all of these, but having the option is nice.

Geekom Mini IT11: Connectivity

Even though it’s small, the Geekom Mini IT11 has a lot to offer when it comes to connectivity options: All three of its USB Type-A ports are USB 3.0 compatible, so they can be used for a lot of different things. The Mini IT11 is lucky that it also has USB 4.

This means that a lot of different external devices can be connected, which means that the small computer can be used for a lot more things. The Geekom Mini IT11 can even connect up to four screens at the same time. We also can’t forget to mention that it has a 2.5G network connection and an SD card reader that works very well thanks to its UHS II speeds.

Geekom Mini IT11: Software & Drivers

Geekom Mini IT11

Pro Mini IT 11s have Windows 11. In addition, the manufacturer advertises a dual-boot setup with Linux. Pre-installed software and drivers are absent! First-time Geekom Mini IT 11 users see Windows 11. Microsoft shows how beginner-friendly Windows has become with its self-explanatory setup. In addition to the guided setup, Windows has a new design with a centred taskbar, integrated malware protection, and an unmatched selection of programmes and apps.

A few years ago, installing drivers on new PCs was difficult, but Geekom’s OEM version makes it easy. Only video codecs or peripheral drivers like mice or keyboards are needed after the first boot. Finally, Geekom’s lack of bloatware is great. Windows 11 is too complicated to list all its pros and cons. You can start installing the software you need without installing any unnecessary programmes. A good transition to discuss small PC performance.

Geekom Mini IT11: Performance

Even though the IT11 looks great, that won’t matter if the inside isn’t up to par. Thank goodness that’s not the case here. The review model of the IT11 comes with an 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1195G7 quadcore processor that keeps things running smoothly. It comes with Windows 11 Pro. For the IT11 to run quickly, the 5.0GHz max turbo frequency and 12M smart cache have been very important. It can be configured for two 11th Gen i5 processors and the i7-1165G7.

There were very few times when the system slowed down, and I found that it worked just as well as my main computer, a Lenovo with an i7-9000 3.00 GHz processor. It didn’t seem to be too affected by heavy programmes like Adobe Photoshop or my usual collection of way too many Firefox and Opera tabs. Its almost unbearably quiet fan turned on surprisingly rarely during the day. Things did move a little more slowly, but I only had to restart Firefox. This has happened on every computer I’ve used.

Pros

  • Powerful Performance
  • Compact and Portable
  • Upgradable
  • Plenty of Ports
  • Quiet Operation

Cons

  • No optical drive
  • Limited storage

Final Words

Even though Mini PCs are mostly about saving money, buying one like the Mini IT11 Mini PC should be a good idea because it’s very flexible and can be easily set up to be a firewall, a media hub, or something else when it’s not needed as a desktop system.

As good as it is, the Geekom Mini IT11 is one of the few NUC designs that can easily compete with the Intel reference designs. It’s also not a cheap copy. As long as you make a simple change, the Mini IT11 can be used for a lot of different things. Businesses that need the most out of their hardware should get this. It has more power than a low-end desktop or cheaper NUC.
